Acid Rock

Calcite in the limestone commonly originates from marine organisms but can also be present through groundwater that precipitated the material.

Calcite can either be precipitated or dissolved by ground water depending on several environmental factors. It can become less soluble as the water temperature increases -a peculiar characteristic. In the right conditions, calcite forms mineral coatings that glue the rock grains together or fill cracks and fractures in the stone.

*Limestone Colouring*

The varying colours prevalent in this stone derive from the impurities that are present, especially on weathered surfaces. These impurities can be clay, organic remains, sand and iron oxide. Formations of the stone can be crystalline, granular, clastic or massive and can be classified more precisely as Folk and Dunham.

Travertine is a variety of limestone found along the edges of water such as hot and cold springs, streams and waterfalls. The material can reform into marble during geographical shifts over time such as mountain building, and is more resistant then other sedimentary rocks, usually occuring amongst hills and typically amongst clay soils. Examples of huge formations can be seen at County Clare in Ireland, Malham Cove in North Yorkshire and the Isle of White. The material is also prevalent in Sweden, the United States and Vietnam.

Limestone is commonly used in architecture across the world in modern construction in Europe and North America and in many older landmarks such as the great pyramids in Egypt which are made entirely from the same. There is a city in Ontario, Canada that is nicknamed Limestone City because every building there is built from it. Limestone is relatively easy to work with and commonly available which is why it gets used extensively in construction despite the cost as it is an expensive material.

*Acid Rain*

Marble and limestone tiles are susceptible to acid rain because of their porous qualities, and this can be a huge problem for statues and buildings alike. When cleaning the stone, a neutral or mild alkaline solution should be used at all times to prevent further erosion of the rock.

Mathew Hogard is an experienced tile dealer and advisor. Him articles provide informative data on maintenance and installation of limestone tiles, Marble tiles, ceramic tiles, travertine tiles, Bathroom Tiles etc.

Punk Music Video

There are many different ways that you can get lessons that will help you teach yourself guitar. There are guitar magazines, dvd’s, cd’s, books, tablature, online membership sites, teachers and probably a dozen other methods that I haven’t even thought of. One of the oldest and most popular ways is the use of guitar magazines. You can find many of these magazines at your local bookstore, grocery store or corner/convenience store. Most of them will contain lessons, gear reviews, album reviews, interviews with guitar players and some even throw in a cd or dvd that have video lessons and gear demonstrations. If you really like a particular guitar magazine, subscriptions are available at discounted yearly or more rates.

So which one is the best? Well that depends on a few things:

1. Where you are in your guitar playing? Beginner, intermediate or advanced?

2. What style of music are you into? Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Blues, Country etc.?

3. What do you want more of in your guitar magazine? Tabs, lessons, gear reviews?

Before you go running off to your local magazine stand to look for a magazine that’s right for you, check out the following list that I have put together for you of 3 of the best guitar magazines that are available today. Please keep in mind that these are my choices of the top 3 and depending on your taste, you may think another publication is better. But at least this list will give you a head start and you don’t have to thumb through every magazine on the rack.

Guitar World:

Guitar World is one of the most popular monthly magazines on the market and contains guitar and bass tablature of around five songs per issue. The lessons are directed at beginner and intermediate players and most of the lessons, tabs and interviews are in the Hard Rock and Heavy Metal genres. The subscriptions are available at a pretty hefty discount and you can also upgrade your subscription and get a bonus cd-rom with each magazine. These cd-roms will play video lessons, gear demonstrations and music from some amazing guitarists. For more information check out

Total Guitar:

Total guitar is a monthly magazine from the U.K. and is the most popular guitar magazine in Europe. This is in my opinion the best magazine for beginner guitarists. Don’t get me wrong, there are lots of lessons for guitar players of all abilities but Total Guitar focuses mostly on the novice. The mag has a nice variety of tab for Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Blues, Punk, Country and Folk, so there is something for everyone. Another great thing about Total Guitar is that unlike most guitar magazines, they don’t focus on articles and expensive gear but focus on teaching beginner guitar players how to play properly.

Each magazine also comes with a free cd that contains audio examples of the lessons and best of all, backing tracks for all the tabs. These backing tracks are great because they have the guitar parts missing so you can jam along with the song just like you were playing with the band.

The only downfall with this publication is that if you live outside of the U.K., expect to pay a lot for a subscription. Check out for more information.

Guitar Techniques:

Made by the same company that makes Total Guitar, Guitar Techniques is also a top-notch magazine. Guitar Techniques also has a massive amount of lessons that are spread out along many genres including Rock, Heavy Metal, Blues, Jazz and County. This magazine specializes in guitar instruction and it shows. You also get a cd with the backing tracks for the tabs and lesson examples.

You’ll get everything from beginner tips to some more advanced soloing lessons. They also get right into the different styles or techniques of your favorite guitarists. They explain exactly what scales and techniques they use and how the artist gets their sound. They then give you examples tabbed out so you can learn exactly how to play it. So there you have my list of the Top 3 Guitar Magazines that will help you teach yourself guitar. Hopefully it has made your choice a little easier. Now go get it and start shredding!

Country Music Artists

Country Music as we know it has been around for decades, with the 1920’s seen as the ‘era’ of Country; with thousands of faces, some well-known, some fading into obscurity lining the Hall of Fame, who are the important figureheads in the history of Country Music? Who pioneered it, we know and love today? Here are some of the founders:

A.C Robertson

Alexander (known as Eck) Robertson recorded the first commercial Country Music song in 1922! He was born in 1887 and lived in Texas, growing up learning to play the fiddle, he eventually found himself with a recording contract. In 1922 Eck recorded the now famous track “Sally Gooden.” It never made it big, and it didn’t sell many copies, but he began the industry we know today.

As the first ever recorded artist, Eck Robertson certainly deserves to be considered a pioneer.

Vernon Dalhart

Vernon Dalhart had the first Country Singer to have a nationwide hit in 1924 -just 2 years after Eck Robertson sang, with “Wreck of the Old ’97.” Vernon was born in 1883 as Marion try Slaughter, he took his name from two towns were he worked. He applied and was hired by Edison records, but he didn’t start out as a Country Singer, he began with classical and dance, later in 1924 he released his first song which quickly became a hit. He went on to record many different hits, using various names, hundreds in fact!

While Vernon may have not begun his career, he certainly made an impact on the business, alerting recording companies to how lucrative it could be, for that and for singing the first country song to become a nationwide hit, Vernon Dalhart deserves his place in the pioneers.

Jimmie Rodgers

Jimmie Rodgers if often known as ‘The Father of Country Music,” he recorded “The Soldier’s Sweetheart” and “Sleep, Baby, Sleep” in 1927 and although they didn’t make millions, they did achieve some success and fame. But Jimmie was determined to make it big and recorded another song ‘Blue Yodel” or “T for Texas” as it is often known. This song earned him his stardom, selling hundreds of thousands of copies.

Jimmie Rodgers made a good career for himself out of singing Country, and influenced many artists, Country and non country alike; sadly he died at 35 years old from TB. For his contribution, Jimmie Rodgers earned his place among the pioneers of Music.

The Carter Family

The Carter Family was a group that recorded in the late 1920s to the late 1950s, they are considered to be the first Country vocal group, in the group was Delaney Carter, his wife Sarah Carter and his sister-in-law Maybelle Carter.

They made their first recording in 1927 with “Wandering Boy” and “Poor Orphan Child,” later they created the well known, “Keep On the Sunny Side,” and many more besides. Their songs became very popular and very well known.

Later though the group disbanded and split, with Maybelle singing with her children and occasionally the group re-uniting to sing a hit, merging with several family generations.

The Carter Family’s songs have been covered by artists such as Joan Baez and even Bob Dylan, but as important as the songs were, the Carter Family pioneered a new way of playing the guitar the “Carter Style.” With such influence on the world, the Carter Family deserves their place as an early pioneer.

It has a long history spanning decades, and these among other later pioneers have created the wonderful world of this music that we know today, they deserve their place in Country Music history.
